A bus fell down a cliff, this news says. Three were killed, 40 injured. Was it the faulty brakes again that caused it? Or the cliff? Let's blame the cliff for a change.

An agriculture official says rice sufficiency is possible if we increase our demand for other staples. No, not by adopting a special diet called starvation.

What are the other staples the DA official talked about? Sweet potato or camote, cassava or balanghoy, yam or gabi, corn, etcetera. That's going back to the wartime years when many a body and soul were kept together by these staples.

An estimated 5,000 Marian devotees joined the "Walk for Mary" foot procession last Sunday dawn (September 11/14). There were more walkers than last year. The harder life becomes, the more walkers for Mary. "Asa pa man ta modangop, sa gobyernong dili ato?" one old woman was heard saying.

My friend Lorenzo "Chao" Sy continues to get involved in the promotion of basketball in Cebu. He's bringing to Cebu--this time to Bogo City -- the 10th Asean Universities Basketball Championship on  October 22-26. This I learned from Banat News assistant sports editor Gabby G. Malagar.

The AUBC is not a so-so cagefest. It is an international-level basketball event involving as it does top universities in Asia, including Huaquiao University of China and MiJong Ji University of South Korea.

"Empty container vans are to be converted into shelters for the homeless," says this news item here. I have tried to correct reporters calling shipping containers as vans. Because vans have wheels. Minor issue, this. But it's an error and has got to be corrected.

I used to serve as Far East correspondent of "Container News," a magazine about the container shipping industry published in the US, and never even for once had I met the words "container vans in the said magazine.

OVERHEARD. Some political groups are trying to egg or to urge Manny V. Pangilinan (MVP) to run for vice president as running mate of VP Jojo Binay. Non-political supporters of MVP are following on the idea. Said one: "Manny in politics? Dios ko! God forbid Bisan unsa ka limpyo sa imahe ni Manny hugaw-hugawan kini sa politika." Another comment: "Kon gusto gyud si MVP mosud sa politika, nganong mag-vice pa man siya ni Binay? Nganong di man mag-presidente?" still another comment: "Ayaw patental, Manny. Puso!"
