HAVE BAT WILL STRIKE - Juanito V. Jabat   - The Freeman

Last weekend the USC Warriors beat the highly favored SWU Cobras, 57-56. It was only a one-point win but it was a win nevertheless. Cebu "basket fans" call that a "half-shot" win.

Which reminds me of a Manila sportswriter who commented in his column: "It's only in Cebu where there's a half shot in basketball." But that's not as rare as winning by the skin of one's teeth.

One thing nice about Luis Miguel Moreno, our gold medalist in archery in the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, is his humility. Luis acknowledged the fact that he won the gold because of his partnership with Li Jiaman, China's No. 3 woman archer. Luis himself said Li Jiaman guided him in the crucial stages of the match.

Cebu Provincial Board Member Gigi Sanchez has come out in support of Rep. Gwen Garcia's move to convert Balamban town into a city. I join those who have hailed PB Member Gigi's support despite the political differences that used to exist between Gigi's father Vice Guv Greg Sanchez and Gwen.

I heard a number of local sports watchers say: "Nabatyagan na nila ang kalig-on sa Gilas Pilipinas...Nakabantay na sila sa pwersa sa Gilas...Hinaut unta nga dili nila kripolon ang team samtang naghuwat pa ta sa Asian Games."

OVERHEARD: The so-called Ice Bucket Challenge has become viral worldwide. The craze has now reached Cebu. Most of those who accepted the challenge are government officials. One official who refused to be doused with cold water, said: "Let those who have no sin be spared from getting doused."
