Don Pedro Rodriguez Streets, Cebu City

CEBUPEDIA - Clarence Paul Oaminal - The Philippine Star

In Cebu City, there are two streets named after Don Pedro Rodriguez.

The first was officially named after him by the Cebu City Council on July 10, 1967 as enunciated under City Ordinance No. 594. It is one of the fifteen (15) streets within the Gochan Subdivision, in "Mabolo District." It starts from Pres. Roxas Street running in a northeast direction parallel to Pres. Magsaysay Street. In the following year, the Cebu City Council enacted Ordinance No. 635, renaming Sampaguita Street to Don Pedro Rodriguez which is located within the Cebu Heights Subdivision (now part of barangay Capitol Site).

Don Pedro Rodriguez was born on 1869. He was the son of spouses Don Jose Rodriguez and Doña Vicenta Lazala. The Rodriguez family was from Bogo. There is also a barangay in Bogo city named after Don Pedro.

He was called the "Grand Old Man of Bogo", but fondly called by close friends as Nyor Indong.  He was married to Doña Masay Veloso.

He studied at the San Carlos Seminary and at the Ateneo de Manila and finished Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Engineering. He was appointed by President Emilio Aguinaldo as Municipal President of Bogo from 1898 to 1903. His brother, Celestino, was one of the first Senators of the Republic, together with Don Filemon Sotto, representing the 10th Senatorial District in 1916.

Don Pedro was elected in 1907 as Representative of the old 7th District of Cebu.  A son, Jose, a Doctor of Medicine, served as Cebu City Mayor from December 7, 1953 to November 16, 1955 and became Congressman of the same district Don Pedro served (old 7th District) in 1941 and reelected in 1946. His other children were Amparo and Pedring.

On October 25, 1932, Don Pedro died as the most beloved and illustrious son of Bogo who donated parcels of land for the Catholic churches in Bogo and Medellin.

The people of Bogo named a barangay after him on suggestion of Macario Deligero, a philanthropist. Deligero sold parcels of land to him at a meager price so that the people could have a place to reside which later became a barangay.

Eufrosino Ursal Luna, a writer of Bag-ong Kusog (November 26, 1965) called Don Pedro as "Mangiloy-ong Bayani sa Bogo" or the Benevolent Hero of Bogo. The two ordinances naming the two streets after Don Pedro were approved by Mayors Carlos J. Cuizon and Eulogio E. Borres.
