Andres Soriano Jr. Avenue, Cebu City

It is the street formerly known as 7th Avenue at the Cebu City North Reclamation Area.

Andres Jr. was the son of Don Andres Soriano Sr. and Carmen Montemar (Maria). His father, Andres Sr. was the son of spouses, Don Eduardo Soriano y Sanz and Dona Margarita Roxas de Ayala y Roxas, the latter was the daughter of Pedro Pablo Roxas of the Zobel-Ayala Clan.

When his father, Andres Sr. died in the 1960's, Andres Jr. took over the family business empire. They owned the Atlas Consolidated Mining Development Corp. He was born on May 3, 1936 and married Maria Natividad and had the following children: Cristina, Edward and Carlos.

Andres Jr., who died on March 19, 1984 in Madrid, Spain, during his lifetime spearheaded the diversification and transformation of San Miguel Corp. into one of the leading corporations of the Philippines which engaged in the manufacture and marketing of food and beverage here and abroad and generated interests in vital and high-priority industries such as paper processing, packaging and copper.

He had a deep concern for humanity and a keen sense of social responsibility. He organized the Philippine Business for Social Progress and the Tondo Youth Foundation in Manila. The goodness of the family, resulted in the establishment of the De La Salle Andres Soriano Memorial College in 1965 in Barangay Lutopan now officially called as Barangay Don Andres Soriano and the Don Andres Soriano Memorial High School established in 1969.

The Cebu City Council on July 13, 1987 presided by Atty. Augusto W. Go, then vice mayor, enacted City Ordinance No. 1255 naming the 7th Avenue as Andres Soriano Jr. Avenue. In memory of and to render honor to a philanthropist and civic leader who exerted efforts in the preservation and enrichment of Philippine cultural heritage.

The ordinance was approved on July 22, 1987 by Jose V. Cuenco, the Officer in Charge of the Office of the Mayor of Cebu City.

The members of the city council (appointed) were: Clemente G. Rama, Emmanuel R. Pacquiao, Alfonso U. Alerre, Nicolas R. Aricayos, Antonio A. Avila Jr., Jessie M. Aznar, Eulogio B. Borres Jr., Julio L. Climaco, Elpidio B. Go, Panfilo B. Malazarte, Pureza T. Onate, Arnulfo R. Ravina and Mario R. Veloso.
