Carlos J. Cuizon St., Cebu City

CEBUPEDIA - Clarence Paul Oaminal - The Freeman

It is the street formerly named as "Potat Street" situated in Barangay Tinago, Cebu City. Carlos J. Cuizon was born on October 30, 1909 in Cebu City. He was the running mate of Sergio Osmeña Jr. as vice mayor in the 1959 elections, but the latter, after winning, decided to continue to serve his term in Congress representing the old 2nd Congressional District, in the election held in 1958. This made Cuizon the Mayor of Cebu City from January 1960 to September of 1963. In 1963, he ran again as vice mayor of Serging, and this time the latter likewise resigned as mayor and ran for the Senate in 1965. Again, Cuizon became mayor by rule of succession being the vice mayor.

Cuizon was a lawyer and became city fiscal during the Japanese Occupation, he was then elected city councilor for three consecutive terms and as president of the municipal board, the equivalent of today's vice mayor. Cuizon was the city's second elected vice mayor.

He served as Technical Adviser of the Office of the Mayor, during the administration of Mayor Florentino Solon and then Mayor Ronald R. Duterte. Solon is a Doctor of Medicine, he was appointed Mayor of Cebu in October 16, 1978 and was elected mayor in 1980. He was appointed mayor by President Ferdinand Marcos during Martial Law. He was mayor up to 1983. Duterte was Mayor from 1983 to 1986. He was Vice Mayor of Solon and assumed the position of mayor when Solon left the office when the latter was appointed Director of Nutrition Center of the Philippines. Duterte, prior to being vice mayor of Solon, was elected City Councilor starting in 1964. A few years before his death, he was Dean of the College of Law of the University of Southern Philippines.

It is said that Mayor Carlos J. Cuizon belongs to a rare breed of government officials who entered public service a poor man and came out a poorer man.

The city council on motion of Councilor Arnulfo B. Ravina on May 8, 1989 enacted Ordinance No. 1328 renaming "Potat Street" to "Carlos J. Cuizon St."
