Bugallon St. and Col. Gines St.

CEBUPEDIA - Clarence Paul Oaminal - The Freeman

It is the street formerly named as "Bugallon St." at Brgy. Suba, Cebu City right beside the Pasil Fish Market and fronting the San Nicolas de Tolentino Parish Church.

Originally, the proposal was to rename Gen. Gines Street situated at the same barangay (Suba) where Bugallon St. is situated, to Belgium St. in honor of the Belgian government which has contributed significantly to the economic development of Brgy. Suba, Cebu City.

When the proposal was submitted to the Cultural Historical Affairs Commission of the City of Cebu for research, study and deliberation, it was found out that Gen. Eugenio Gines, after whom the street was named, was a Cebuano hero who was one of the KKK leaders who fought against the Spaniards during the Battle at Tres de Abril in the year 1898. Col. Gines was called "Lindol" meaning earthquake, he gallantly fought against the Spaniards, it is just fitting that a street was named after him and that it should not be renamed. Most of his comrades-in-arms were forgotten and remain unrecognized by the people they fought and died for, hence a street was collectively named after them, and that is the Katipunan St. It is the street that traverses Barangay Labangon and Tisa.

The Cultural Historical Affairs Commission (CHAC) also found out that "Jose Torres Bugallon" after whom the "Bugallon St." was named, was a native of the municipality then known as "Salasa" in the Province of Pangasinan. He was accorded honor by the renaming of the town in his name.

By virtue of City Ordinance No. 1419 on motion of Councilor Arnulfo R. Ravina, seconded by Councilor Jessie M. Aznar on March 2, 1992, the street formerly known as "Bugallon", situated at Barangay Suba, Cebu City was officially renamed and known as "Belgium Street" as a fitting honor and a manifestation of gratitude of the Cebuanos to the Belgian government for its contribution to the economic development not only of Barangay Suba but also the barangays of Pasil and Sawang Calero.

It was approved by Mayor Tomas R. Osmeña on March 13, 1992.
