Hilario Abellana

CEBUPEDIA - Clarence Paul Oaminal - The Freeman

Though no street is named after him, Hilario Abellana has been given the privilege of bearing the name of the biggest and oldest government high school in Cebu, the Abellana National School.

Hilario Abellana served as President of the then Municipality of Cebu. He then became the Governor of Cebu when he won the election in 1940. He replaced Governor Buenaventura Rodriguez (who was running for refelection), who died a day before the election. He campaigned only for a day and won the election. He was the Governor of Cebu when the Japanese Imperial Army arrived in Cebu. He was executed near the U.P. Cebu grounds on January 15, 1945.

Efforts were made to locate his remains. By virtue of Republic Act 334 enacted on June 20,1948, a monetary reward of P5,000 to any person who could find Abellana's remains.

The school named after him was originally called the Provincial High School, created by virtue of Act 372 on March 6, 1902 but was opened only in 1906. When the Provincial High School was transferred in Argao in 1945, the school in Cebu City was renamed as Cebu City High School. On June 22, 1957, by virtue of Republic Act 1945, it was renamed from Abellana Vocational High School to Abellana National Vocational School. On June 7, 1961, Republic Act 3027 was enacted changing the name of the school from Abellana National Vocational School to Abellana National School.

When Batas Pambansa Bilang 412 was passed on June 10, 1983, the school was put under the jurisdiction of the Cebu State College of Science and Technology, the Board of Trustees then changed the name of the school to Abellana College of Arts and Trades.
