Old 2nd Congressional District of Cebu

Unlike today, where the 2nd Congressional District is composed of the following towns: Argao, Dalaguete, Alcoy, Boljoon, Oslob, Santander, Samboan, Ginatilan, Malabuyoc, Alegria, Badian, Moalboal, Alcantara, Ronda and Dumanjug, the so called “Old 2nd Congressional District” from 1907 to 1972 was composed of the following: Cebu (became a city in 1936), Liloan, Mandaue (became a city in 1969), Opon (now called Lapu-Lapu City), Cordova (reestablished in 1912), Compostela (reestablished in 1919), Consolacion (reestablished in 1920). When the Americans arrived in 1899, several towns lost its status and became barrios, and town leaders petitioned for their reestablishment with the governor.

The following served as the Representatives of the Old 2ndCongressional District:

1907-1909   Sergio Osmeña

1909-1912   Sergio Osmeña

1912-1916   Sergio Osmeña

1916-1919   Sergio Osmeña

1919-1922   Sergio Osmeña

(In the 1st Philippine Legislature, Don Sergio Osmeña Sr. rose to national prominence for his election as the 1st Speaker of the Philippine Assembly.)

1922-1925     Vicente Y. Sotto

(Don Vicente Sotto, later became a senator and authored  Republic Act 53 otherwise known as the Press Freedom Law.)

1925-1928        Paulino Gullas

(Atty. Paulino Gullas founded the “The Freeman”.)

1928-1931   Sotero B. Cabahug

1931-1934   Sotero B. Cabahug

 

(Sotero B. Cabahug also served as Governor of Cebu.)

 

1934-1935   Hilario Abellana

1935-1938   Hilario Abellana

1938-1941   Hilario Abellana

 

(Hilario Abellana also served as Governor of Cebu.)

 

1941-1946        Pedro Lopez

1946-1949   Vicente Logarta

1949-1953   Leandro Tojong

 

(Leandro Tojong also served as Mayor of Cebu.)

1969-1972  John H. Osmeña

 

(John H. Osmeña, also became a Cebu City Mayor, Senator and in 2013, elected as Mayor of Toledo City.)
