Julian A. Alcantara Street
Julian A. Alcantara Street is the street formerly known as P. Del Rosario Extension in BarangaySambag I. It is the street parallel to N. Bacalso Avenue. It was named after Julian Alcantara by virtue of Cebu City Ordinance No. 1013 approved by the City Council on December 18, 1978. Julian was elected in 1922 as Municipal Vice President and also served as Acting Municipal President of the then Municipality of Cebu.
In the elections of 1934, Julian A. Alcantara was again elected as Vice President of the Municipality of Cebu. Then Governor Buenaventura Rodriguez (a street is also named after him) appointed Alcantara as Provincial Warden of the Cebu Provincial Jail (now Cebu Museum), which was then in a bad condition, where prisoners were unruly and rioting against undisciplined guards. He was able to restore order in the jail, discipline the guards and restore the sanitary conditions of the prisoner's cells.
President Manuel L. Quezon visited the jail twice and found it to be the cleanest jail in the country and the best administered.
He was appointed by President Sergio Osmena Sr. after the war as Presidential Assistant, in charge of the distribution of UNRRA goods in the Visayas and Mindanao, a job filled with corruption, intrigues and petty jealousy, yet he was able to do his job honestly and efficiently without being corrupted.
He was President of the Nacionalista Party in Cebu City, relinquishing the post only to Sergio Osmeña, Jr. when the latter became City Mayor of Cebu.
His service to the public continued when President Ramon Magsaysay appointed him as Councilor of Cebu City in February of 1954 until 1956.
It is said that Julian Alcantara died a poor man, bereft of fortune yet rich in honor, dignity and honesty. He was never been connected with any anomaly while in public office.
