The noise about the Sabah crisis

HAVE BAT WILL STRIKE - Juanito V. Jabat   - The Freeman

There's been a lot of noise about the Sabah crisis. This noise about Sabah has gone viral in the Internet.

Malaysia says the P70,000 they're paying yearly to the Sultan of Sulu is for “cession money” not rental. Noy Temiong throws in his two cents worth: “If it's cession, there ought to be no more payment.” He adds: “Sabah diha Malaysia oy.”

“Work on the new Bohol Airport in Panglao starts,” says this news story here. A Bol-anon friend of mine says: “Work on this airport always starts but never ends.”

“Tomas blames Rama for City Council's loss” -- Headline. Comments one political observer: “News like this I no longer give a damn. Let's have something unself-serving.”

***

Here's one advertisement that deserves attention: “Island Breeze” (TF, March 9/13). The Gaisano Country Mall is bringing to Cebu a cultural extravaganza from Polynesia on March 12, Tuesday. This is something new. A rare type of entertainment.

A group of musicians and dancers from Polynesia, sometimes also known as the South Sea - American Samoa, New Zealand, Samoa, Fiji, Cook, Tahiti and the Hawaiian Islands - will present to us a kind of show that's far different from the run-of-the-mill shows we're used to seeing.

I asked two high school students from a public school what they do on a Good Friday. One of them said: “Magluto mi'g benignit, Sir.” The other said: Moapil ko og bingo sa mga silingan, Sir.” No one thought of reflecting on what the speakers in the Siete Palabras would say on that day. “Dili man ko maminaw og Siete Palabras, Sir,” one of the two said.

How about the menfolk, the older guys in the neighborhood? Some do listen to the Siete Palabras on TV or radio. But there are those who go to the cockpits or tigbakayan.

Phoned-in opinion by a reader who identified himself as Jimmy (please don't mention my family name): “There are many foreigners who have left their native countries to live with us. It's sad that many of them are victimized by our people. Is it possible for our lawmakers to pass a law penalizing to the highest degree locals who commit crimes against foreigners who have taken up residence in our country?”

OVERHEARD.
