No one is safe here anymore?

HAVE BAT WILL STRIKE - Juanito V. Jabat   - The Freeman

The parents of the child killed by a stray bullet said: “No one is safe in this country anymore.” Right. Even an NBI agent was shot inside an NBI office. (PhilSTAR, Jan. 13/13.)

A Manila TV show host said: “Many of our laws have no teeth.” Seriously speaking, it's not the job of the dental society to do something.

***

A banner headline of the Banat News said a child was bitten dead by a snake. A snake will always be a snake whether it's its year or not. Look what it did to Adam and Eve.

I received this letter from a schoolteacher: “...Mr. Jabat, have you observed that people today have become lazy? My fellow teachers, for instance, no longer say 'Good morning' or 'Good evening' ... They just say, 'Morning' or 'Evening'.”

***

Yes, Ma'am, I have observed. Maybe it's OK. I think it's not so bad as to be greeted by someone with: “Gud a.m. or Gud p.m.” like what most texters do.

I was listening to a TV discussion on gun ban. Everyone wanted a gun ban. But not one discussant had a way of implementing the ban to cover the guns in the possession of hoodlums who number by the millions.

***

A friend of mine who was also listening to the TV gun ban forum said: “I'm a strong advocate of banning guns of any kind but if it's true that there are more than a million loose guns in our midst, kinsang guwapong hero ang mangita anang loose guns?”

A PhilSTAR business columnist says an ailing taipan gave P4.6 billion of his wealth to a charitable foundation. Wise move. One can't bring one centavo of his wealth to his grave. I bow to this taipan.

Another Filipino saint coming up? A news report in the PhilSTAR says the Catholic clergy in Vigan City has started the first stap in the long process for the canonization of the late Ilocano Bishop Alfredo Versoza.

***

Bishop Versoza who hailed from Vigan belonged to a land-owning Versoza clan. He was rich like many of the saints in history but he shared his blessings with the poor. There are many evidences of such sharing.

OVERHEARD. Two personnel of a national government regional office were heard talking about the Sinulog by the faithful at the end of a Holy Mass at the Pilgrim Center. Said one: “Kaming tanan nanayaw og sinulog.” Said another: “Hikit-an ko bitaw si Sir pag-Sinulog sad.” Another one joined in: “Ay'g saba ha. Naay nikomento nga ang Sinulog ni Sir murag Gangnam Style.”
