Midlife

READER'S VIEWS - Henry L. Yu, M.D. - The Freeman

News about a person’s confinement in the hospital due to sickness, etc. would bring in sad news. For who wouldn’t be? All of us, whether we like it or not, will be old and sickly someday. Oh well, these are all part of life. After passing thru the stages of Infancy, Babyhood, Early Childhood, Late Childhood, Adolescence, Early Adulthood, now comes the Middle Adulthood or Midlife (40-65). And along with it are the so-called Midlife Fears: The fear of getting old, of getting sick, of experiencing a litany of pain here and there, of seeing loved ones go, or being left behind by loved ones, the empty nest syndrome, the final curtain, etc.

At midlife, there are times when we would suddenly be awaken from our sleep and would find ourselves immersed in such eclectic feelings, with some imagined fears bogging us. In the stillness of the night, let us call on Jesus and pray and remember these two passages from the Bible:

(a) “Do not worry about your life, what you will eat, or about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life?”

(b) “Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today’s trouble is enough for today”.
