Millions can't read; blame TV and radio

I heard someone say that some people in the government are throwing their weight around. If that’s excess weight, throw it where it’s needed — the dumps.

It says here that there are so many poverty-stricken Pinoys. That could be the reason why many students don’t know what “leftovers” are.

I’m told that there are superstitious people who believe that the 10-peso coin is bad luck. Oh, yeah? How about if you got a bagful of this coin?

Someone has been sending me promo materials for an expensive car. Thank you. Apparently, this thoughtful someone doesn’t know I can’t even afford a jalopy.

A public relations person (not here) has been sued for slander for talking too much in his/her speech. I remember what Calvin Coolidge once said: “I was never in trouble with anyone by anything I did not say.”

I read in Mel Tobias’ PhilSTAR column (“Living in Canada”) that there are 775 million people who can’t read. The culprit I think is modern info technology. More people today go to their TV and radio sets to hear the news instead of reading the newspaper.

Columnist Mel Tobias also says that singing while driving is a distraction. It impairs people’s abilities behind the wheel. I suggest these people to do their singing in the bathroom.

I recently read an article (not in the STAR) despising gays. I didn’t like the writer’s opinion. He/she lumped all gays in one basket of bad eggs.

I know of many respectable gays. One of them is my media colleague who admits he’s gay and is proud of it. He’s a multitalented media person. Can’t mention his name not having sought his permission for me to do it.

OVERHEARD. A department store sales clerk was heard telling someone that she was warned by management after she was reported as saying: “Ang uyab sa anak sa akong amo mahalon og cell phone apan di kamao mo txt.” Asked why, she said: “Di man kamao mo suwat, so voice call lang pirme.” (if a cell phone holder can’t write, she or he can’t text, right?)
