EDITORIAL - Dolphy's serious legacy

- The Philippine Star

Even before he died last Tuesday, so much had been said about the life of Dolphy. Praises for the comedy king came from everywhere, describing how he lived a simple and down-to-earth life.

In a career that spanned almost seven decades playing colorful comedic roles, Dolphy touched millions of lives. It is the laughter generated from his roles that enabled poor Filipinos to forget the daily life’s ordeal.

But to say that Dolphy inspired millions through his exploits in movies is purely an understatement. He stirred national consciousness through his being “humble, honest, and helpful” outside the big screen, as what President Aquino said in his tribute to Dolphy few hours after he passed away.

Yes, he became a legend through those wacky moves that made life more bearable just for a moment. Yet outside the realm of his countless roles, he was not only a great pillar of the industry but a compassionate figure that helped thousands through his philanthropic drive.

His being honest and principled had been truly the biggest serious legacy he bequeathed to Filipinos. And he knows his boundary, refraining to venture into other fields he knew he would never have a chance to shine.

Cashing in on his unprecedented popularity, politicians once tried to lure Dolphy into running for senator. But he just laughed at them. He had said that it is easy to run but it would really be a total disaster if he wins.

By refusing to run for public office, Dolphy clearly knew his limitations. Being in politics is not a kind of role Filipinos would expect him to excel. He does not want to dupe Filipinos by pretending to be a messiah of the poor. That is why he cannot imagine his life tending to a business he doesn’t know how to run.

It was good Dolphy did not succumb to the ugly world of politics. Otherwise it would have been a disastrous venture. Being honest and principled helped him gain a clear mind understanding his limitations.  At least he has his dignity intact until his last breath.
