Allow me to share highlights of the invitation for you all to this event from Mission Imaginal Teresa Dosdos Ruelas and Marc Canton, both from the Movement for a Livable Cebu. They wrote:
“As Cebuanos and visitors to Cebu experience first hand the effects of rapid urban growth – overpopulation, high unemployment and poverty, traffic congestion, pollution, etc. - it is becoming clearer than ever that we risk the loss of our quality of life and our global competitiveness. Only the acts of educating ourselves, foresight, planning and creating together can turn the tide towards a truly livable and sustainable Cebu for all.
It is in this light that the Movement for a Livable Cebu invites you to the “Sustainable Cities Dialogues 2” on creating a Livable Cebu featuring two talks by world-renown Cebuanos — an urban planner and a government official, both of whom have provided some of the most sustainable, caring, thoughtful, environmentally-friendly and community-conscious planning, business and good governance work for Cebu.
“Learning from the Metro Cebu Land Use and Transport Study (MCLUTS) – Where to Go from Here” by Dr. Primitivo Cal, a professor at the School for Urban and Regional Planning of the University of the Philippines will focus on his experiences in urban planning both in Cebu as well as around the world, initial successes, and what can be learned from the stumbling blocks to its full implementation. Dr. Cal will also offer insights to the most successful approaches in urban planning.
In “A Journey From Poverty to Resiliency” San Francisco, Camotes Vice Mayor Alfredo A. Arquillano will share accounts of a community’s experience in using an indigenous method towards self-organization at the sub-village (Purok) level that won the UN Sasakawa Award for Disaster Risk Reduction in 2011. The achievement has been recognized worldwide as a best practice in achieving resiliency among poor populations and has been shared with government officials of cities in other countries like Korea, Sri Lanka, Germany, Switzerland, Thailand and Vietnam.
We are at the crossroads of rapid change, and we need to decide now how we envision our beloved Cebu to be. By increasing the participation of Civil Society in plotting our future together, the resources of the public and private sectors may finally be synergized towards attaining this vision of Cebu. Our government is encouraging us to do this. The call of the times urges us to seize the moment. There is no Cebu worth fighting and living for without you.
