Square pegs in round holes

HAVE BAT WILL STRIKE - Juanito V. Jabat   -

Chinese ships are said to be crowding in Panatag shoal. No one can stop them. Us? How can an ant stop an Elephant?

***

It says here that Chinese ships are free to come and go in Panatag. We are supposed to scream: “No in our house!” But no one is heard screaming.

***

China has once again berated Phl: “Don’t involve other countries in the Spratly dispute.” That’s one kind of bullying. But what can an ant do?

Thousands are running these days for different reasons. They run to clear a river, they run for unity and nation-building, they run for the environment, etc. There was a time when I saw only one man running – Raffy Uytiepo.

Job fairs have exposed job mismatch among job seekers. In other words, many applicants for certain openings are square pegs in round holes.

***

I know of one Cebuano engineer who could not land an engineering job. He ended up working in a food shop as baker. Later, for a higher pay he accepted a job in a mortuary in Manila.

***

This Cebuano engineer much later forgot all about his engineering career and went to school for mortuary personnel specializing in embalming. “Embalming is a wide open field where the pay is high,” he said. “You can rise higher if you’re dead serious about this profession,” he said dead seriously, sans punning.

Kids now have to go through kindergarten to be able to be admitted to Grade One. Am I correct? Some years ago I met a top business leader who was dismayed on not seeing his name in the list of alumni of a local university. He completed the kindergarten course in that university, so he considered himself an alumnus.

***

This business leader said kinder graduates here are taken for granted. In Europe, he said, the kinder course is considered as important as the other academic courses. He said most leaders of Europe first learned their ABC as kinder kids.
