Old-time Lapu-Lapu dad overloved

- READER'S VIEWS -

At the plaza near the church of the Virgin of the Rule, there stands along one of its sides the golden bust of Mariano S. Dimataga who, while serving as town mayor of Opon, Cebu, planted a Narra seedling in 1938 with a dream. He became the first city mayor of Lapu-Lapu City (1961-1967).

Today, as we approach the bust from the western side, we see in full view at our right the giant Narra tree. But when we get nearest the point where we stand face-to-face, he seems to disappear from our view. Why?

Of course, we honor Dodong Oping, as he was fondly called, but we overlove him by planting a vine tree at his front, thus obscuring our view.

Gleaning from the inscription in gold plate, the present Narra tree and his beloved town now a city, serve as silent reminders that Dodong’s dream has been fulfilled.

Perhaps we better uproot that vine plant that spoils him.
