Let not the summer heat sizzle in your head

HAVE BAT WILL STRIKE - Juanito V. Jabat   -

The Azkals did it again in the AFC Challenge Cup in Katmandu. They beat Tajikistan, 2-1. That’s much more fun than anything that has happened in the CJ impeachment trial in recent days.

Next sked for the Azkals is the semis match with Turkmenistan at 4:30 pm today, Friday. That’s much, much more fun to watch. Another victory for the Azkals is what many want to see. Never mind who gets pummeled in the impeachment court.

Pagasa says it’s going to be a sizzling April. The temperature could soon soar to as high as 38 degrees Celsius. OK lang. As long as the heat doesn’t sizzle in anyone’s head.

Once in a while humor seeps into the tense and staid impeachment trial like when Senate President & Impeachment Court Chair Juan Ponce Enrile asked a witness: “Do you have children?” And the answer was: “Sa asawa ko, isa lang.”

E-mail from someone who signed his name only as “E.H.T.” of Cebu City: “I’m not a lawyer so I don’t know much about the legal principle (?) lawyers call subjudice. May I know if this principle covers the statements of some lawyers, journalists, kibitzers, etc. regarding the impeachment trial? Is it not violative of the subjudice rule for Malacanang to say, ‘No way CJ can be acquitted’?”

I was shocked by the news that Bella Veloso, widow of my good friend and media colleague Wilfredo “Boy” Veloso died in a fire that razed her house in Lapu-Lapu City recently. Bella, according to newspaper reports, died when she tried to save her special child trapped in a burning room.

Bella was wife of Boy Veloso, a highly respected local journalist who died a few years ago. Boy, let me recall, led a small group of news correspondents (for Manila broadsheets) who organized the Sportswriters Association of Cebu (SAC) which Boy himself headed for some years.
