Let the fittest of the 2 survive

HAVE BAT WILL STRIKE - Juanito V. Jabat   -

What’s this I hear that eating sweets can make you gay? No problem here. I’m diabetic.

Chief Justice Renato Corona reminded lawyers that “lawyering is not a profit-making venture.” Hearing this on TV, the son of a lawyer friend of mine said: “Dad, mag-nurse na lang ko.”

* * *

Levity aside, the Chief Justice should be hailed, as he has been hailed by many, for frankly telling his compañeros that lawyering is not a  business proposition where profit is the primary objective.

* * *

There is a saying related to what the Chief Justice said: “Some people inherit money, some earn it, and some are lawyers.” Hehe!

Nildo (family name withheld upon request of my source) of Cebu flew to Manila the other day to purchase packaged/canned food, bottled water, clothing, etc. for distribution to flood-stricken families in Bulacan.

* * *

“My way of expressing my gratitude to God for sparing me and my family and my fellow Cebuanos from the calamity suffered by our brothers and sisters in Luzon,” Nildo told a friend at the airport.

* * *

Someone close to Nildo said that this golden-hearted Cebuano, whose official residence is in California, came home after several years in America, for a vacation with his wife and daughter. But the tragedy that hit Luzon hit him real bad, too. He decided to spend part of his vacation money on charity.

E-mail from Leandro Jacominea: “I am from Bacolod City but I often read The Freeman and your column on the net. This seemingly childish verbal tussle between Cebu’s present mayor and the former mayor is lots of fun but to sensible people, it’s a pain in the neck. Can’t the Cebu media do something to knock some sense into their heads?”

* * *

Knock some sense into their heads? Many people here have become so used to these bickerings they seem to have given the two the option to let them be or let them bite each other, letting the fittest of them survive. By the way, Mr. Jacominea, thank you for the interest you have shown in our way of political life.

My friend and fellow columnist Bobit Avila sends me text messages every morning to make my day. Yesterday, I got this: “I wish you the best BER starting today, BERy healthy, BERy happy, BERy rich, BERy generous and BERy young looking always. God bless you during these BER months.”
