Catching up with Caitlin, Luci, ethnic music, Ariel / Art works at Casa y Jardin

Today at 7 p.m. in Miriam College Auditorium, flutist Caitlin Coyiuto will render Georges Hue’s “Fantasie”, pianist Luci Magalit, Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1, each to be accompanied by the Metro Manila Concert Orchestra under the eminent Josefino “Chino” Toledo.

Already achieving virtuosic feats, Caitlin, only 17, has studied under Vincent Lucas, principal flutist, Orchestre de Paris; David Formisano, Teatro La Scala’s principal flutist. She also attended a master class of Mathieur Dufour, principal flutist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and was a pupil of Japanese-French flutist Yoko Enomoto.

A UP summa cum laude graduate, Luci earned her Master’s Degree under Jiovanney E. Cruz. Grand prize winner of The Ultimate Pianist Competition in 2006 and recipient of Special Prizes for Best Performance of a work by Mozart and of a work by a Filipino composer for Best Vocal Accompaniment and Chamber Music, Luci is also a two-time recipient of the Outstanding Performance Award in the Amati NY festivals. She has performed solo and chamber works in Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia and NY.

Also in “Emergence . . . Hearing the Future” will be innovative, original compositions for symphony, ethnic and folk instruments:

“Sonata” by Ores Oreo III and Johanna van Gestel’s “Likot-Kulitan” fuse symphony with banduria music; Michale Bulaong’s “Isang Paglalakbay” merges orchestral instruments with bamboo bean pod rattles and xylophones; in Jan Neland Cabaguas’ “Symphonic Movement”, gongs are counter-balanced by the kulintang; in Robert Sarreal’s “Malalayang Kaisipan”, the bamboo pipe paldong is combined with orchestral instruments.

Players are John Raymond and Jacob Gabriel Sarreal, Ernesto Zaldua Jr., Maria Cristina Orante, Nikki Glenda Cortero, Don Mateo Hilotina, Gabriel Molina, Marie Louise Calvero, Keilah Aubrey Garcia, Sara Matsuura, Jason Nuyda, Mariefrance Ballester and Marga Abejo.

Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra’s principal clarinetist Ariel Sta. Ana will be the soloist in Mozart’s “Clarinet Concerto”, with Olivier Ochanine conducting the PPO on Oct. 7 in the CCP main theater at 8 p.m. Also to be rendered are Revueltas’ “Sensemaya”, Respighi’s “Fete Romane and Angel Peña’s “Igorot Rhapsody”.

Sta. Ana is a two-time NAMCYA winner. After UST Conservatory studies, he earned two Master of Music degrees at Elizabeth U. in Hiroshima for clarinet performance and orchestra conducting.

After a stint with the MSO, he became concert master of the ASEAN Youth Symphony Band in Singapore in 1992. He has attended master classes under the principal clarinetist of the London Symphony Orchestra, a German virtuoso of the Aulos Woodwind Quintet and a renowned French clarinetist.

Sta. Ana was a member of the Hiroshima Wind Orchestra for two years. He has performed in “French Spring in Manila”, the Bamboo Organ and San Agustin Festivals, “Ensemble Europa” and the Opusfest International Festival.

Casa y Jardin Bazaar

The Catholic Women’s Club Casa y Jardin Bazaar will be held on October 2 and 9 at Hotel Intercon’s ballroom from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Artworks on sale will be the Mother and Child Limited Edition Plate by noted artist Anita Magsaysay Ho, a commemorative plate by National Artist Botong Francisco, and paintings and prints of National Artist Arturo Luz done especially for CWC’s 90th year anniversary. Nina Dizon, Martiess Pineda and Joey Sobrepeña are in-charge of the Limited Edition Plate.

The Gold Elephant Table will offer new items donated by members, to be sold at give-away prices.

Other items are Christmas and home décor, brand clothes, export over-runs, jewelry, houseware, bags, ladies’ accessories, footwear, toys, food products and maids’ uniforms.

CWC President Mimi Valerio, the Casa y Jardin Committee chaired by Nikki Valerio with Ane Preysler and Terry Tambunting as co-chairs, invite shoppers to help support CWC’s charities; e.g., the Elsie Gaches Village, Alabang Hospice, Good Shepherd Convent and Gawad Kalinga which will turn over 38 housing units to beneficiaries.
