Angry nature can't be made to stop

HAVE BAT WILL STRIKE - Juanito V. Jabat   -

The headline says: “Road Revo Organizers Say Sorry.” But they’re doing it again in November. Reminds me of some people who go to confession and say “sorry” but commit the same sins again. Hehe!

Someone whom I like to call, albeit in jest, man-about-town, read the headline: “Man Found Dead in Motel Room.” Then he said: “Salamat, dili ako.”

A government hospital is bracing for the shortage of nurses. Where have all those thousands of nursing graduates gone? I ask as if I didn’t know.

An international water convention was held in Manila at a time when water was everywhere, even in the rooms of their hotel.

PRO-7 Director Marcelo Garbo has been reported to have vowed to make the region’s police force the best in the country. “This is just a vow, a promise,” says a retired mediaman. “But,” he adds, “the director will make it happen ... He’s got a name to protect.”

Mrs. Nimfa Adelaida of Punta Princesa has urged government officials not only in Cebu City but also in the towns to step up their effort to “compel” those living near waterways to move to places considered safe. I heard her make this call on radio where she was interacting with a program host or anchor.

“Paminawon kaha na siya?” someone seated near me was heard asking. Mrs. Adelaida didn’t answer her directly but was heard remarking: “At least I was trying to do my part to help save human lives.”

It’s not only the poor villages and towns that are pummeled by nature. Even places of the “elite” (to use Mrs. Nimfa Adelaida’s word) are not spared by Mother Nature when she gets angry.

“Look at Roxas Blvd.,” she said. “The place never got flooded or seriously flooded before. But during the last typhoon, 20-feet waves from Manila Bay hit it like baby tsunami.”

* * *

“Even luxurious hotels like the Sofitel got the madness of typhoon Pedring,” she said. “Who would think that the Sofitel would be battered by the wind and water from Manila Bay, one of the sights the hotel management has been using to draw in hotel guests.”
