More and more Pinoy's gaining weight

There was a discussion on TV about age. The discussants agreed that it’s not true that men age faster than women. It’s only that women — or some of them at least — get stuck at any age lower than their actual or true age.

Reminds me of a lady acquaintance who celebrated her 50th birthday many times. Once I said to her: “Two years ago you were 50, di ba?” She said: “Ana man gyud na, Mr. Jabat, aron kapugngan ang edad.” She died at 75, a year after she celebrated her “50th birthday.”

One columnist friend told me he had some high society women friends who refused to reveal their true age. And when they did, they stammered when giving figures: “Ah, er, 50, I mean 40 ... er, 50 bitaw.”

An article here says: “More and more Filipinos are gaining weight.” This explains, I think, why slimming salons are expanding.

Many newspapers today are filled with writeups about food, complete with colored illustrations that make the food photos look real. This, I think, is the reason why more and more Pinoys are gaining weight, keeping the slimming clinics busy trimming them down to acceptable sizes.

Some 37,000 nursing graduates recently passed the licensure exams. Their prayers have been answered. The next round of prayers might be to seek Heaven’s help in finding a job.

I heard about a mother who has started to count the dollar checks even before her new nurse daughter could land a job in America. Noy Temyong says: “Don’t count the checks before there are jobs.”

E-mail from Roderick Sian of Mandaluyong City: “I have witnessed some CESAFI cage games at the Cebu Coliseum and although the matches were pairings of top collegiate quintets, the enthusiasm of the gallery fans lacked ‘fire’ so to speak.”

Roderick said: “The bleachers were almost empty and the fans did not give their school teams the cheering support they needed.”

He said the bleacher fans in Manila “support their school teams to the hilt.” The fans go in full force to the coliseum to lustily cheer for their teams, he said.
