Don't tamper with Mt. Manunggal reader

Correction please: The trivia item here last Wednesday should have read: “He who has not yet reached the opposite shore should NOT make fun of him who is drowning.”

 “Cebu lotto bettor wins P27 million” — Headline. Noy Temyong says: “Name names ... The Chinese sari-sari store owner to whom I owe much might think I’m it.” Hehe.

We are now observing the season of Lent. Fr. Roy Cimagala in his TF column “Hints and Traces” said there is joy in Lent. The natives of Bantayan have known this for generations.

In Bantayan, there is merrymaking and excessive eating during Lent, even on Good Friday. Many city folks who find it too gloomy in the city on Good Friday hie off to Bantayan for their Lenten observance.

But that is not what Fr. Roy Cimagala meant when he said there is joy in Lent. He was expanding Lent to the Lord’s resurrection and eternal life.

There is a proposal to name Mt. Manunggal after Pres. Ramon Magsaysay who died in a plane crash on that mountain. Mr. Martin Ubaldo, a TF reader, frowns on that proposal.

In a telephone call to this paper, Mr. Ubaldo said: “Our officials should not tamper with names of places that have already become part and parcel of our history ... Do not deprive Mt. Manunggal of its rightful place in our history.”
