Ridding the port of abusive cabbies

HAVE BAT WILL STRIKE - Juanito V. Jabat   -

It’s fun watching tv these days. It’s fun watching some defanged Generals trying to parry the blows from the whistleblowers.

Guvnor Gwen Garcia has appealed to people with suicidal tendencies to steer clear of the two Mandaue-Mactan bridges. If they want to kill themselves they should look for a bridge in Cebu City.

* * *

Regarding the move to outlaw guns, my friend Erning Elizondo, chairman and CEO of the Cebu Integrated Arrastre, Inc., has this to say: “When guns are outlawed, only outlaws have guns.”

Trivia: How do the so-called commercial sex workers end their prayer at bedtime? They say, “Ah, men!” — From reader Leonie Landicho, Talisay City.

Sen. Jinggoy Estrada gave retired Gen. Angelo Reyes the battering ram treatment. He said he had nothing against the former AFP chief of staff. Yes, even if Reyes dumped Jinggoy’s dad in Edsa Dos. Nothing personal, eh?

* * *

This news here says the use of drugs against male impotence is rising worldwide. I suspect this is the reason why there is a runaway population growth in many parts of the world.

The Guvnor has turned her guns on Vice Mayor Joy Augustus Young for the latter’s alleged statement she didn’t like. Joy immediately denied he said it. Did someone put words into Joy’s mouth? Don’t look at me, the reporter who wrote the story must be saying.

Trivia: If you have nothing to say, don’t say it. Keeping mum is also speech. — From reader Tom Relucio of Iloilo City (thru e-mail).

It’s good to know that at last — at long last — official action has been taken against the abusive taxi drivers at the local seaport. The Cebu Ports Authority has finally addressed the complaints against these drivers. Good.

* * *

Starting Feb. 16, only accredited taxi units could enter the port area and queue up to pick up passengers. All passengers taking taxis within the designated area will be given a slip of paper each carrying the name of the taxi, plate number, and body number for easy identification if a cabbie would violate the rule.

* * *

This way of checking abuses of unscrupulous taxi drivers, like the ones who’ve been harassing passengers at the port area for a long time, is not new. The Waterfront Cebu City Hotel in Lahug and some other business establishments in the city have long been practicing this with good result.

* * *

Why the Cebu port authorities took its time to adopt the same simple measure to make abusive taxi drivers toe the line is beyond me.
