EDITORIAL - Noynoy must choose his own wife, not Kris

People love. And if for that reason alone, they are always interested in the love affairs of other people. But nothing catches the attention or fires up the imagination more than the love life of known personalities and celebrities.

The engagement of Prince William and scheduled marriage next year to Kate Middleton was big news everywhere when it was announced. It was big news in a way that the remarriage of his father Prince Charles to Camilla Parker Bowles was not. One was anticipated, the other dreaded.

To a lesser degree, there is also great interest in the love life of our own President Noynoy Aquino, although for reasons starkly different from those that attended Prince William's. There is genuine interest and there is interest forced upon the populace.

Genuine interest comes unbidden. It wells up in the Filipino because he is a Filipino. Whether you like Noynoy or not, he is the president, and anything that affects the president affects everyone of us.

But there is also an unbidden interest in the love life of Noynoy. It is one that has been foisted upon the Filipino. It is one that is being retailed---for what reason nobody knows---by no less than presidential sister Kris Aquino.

It is understandable that being the only male in the brood, Noynoy's sisters would tend to look after their brother with more care and attention than he may truly need or be genuinely comfortable with.

In the end, however, it is still Noynoy's own life that he will have to lead, and it might do well for his self-confidence to be able to have his own love life far away from the interest and influence of his sisters.

Based on the latest reports, however, it appears that the sisters are not about to let Noynoy have his own way. Just recenly, it was Kris Aquino ticking off the women Noynoy has been dating.

The impression given is that any prospective girlfriend of Noynoy needs to pass the approval of the sisters. And anybody will tell you this can indeed be very daunting and will not work ultimately to the benefit and happiness of Noynoy. Noynoy must take charge of his own life.
