Just let him be for now.

As if a movie superstar or showbiz icon to be idolized and always talked about, no less than the bachelor president’s lovelife has been long the topic of “society” pages, no lesser in tabloid. And there’s no waning interest in the offing, as the presidential sisters, like, Ballsy and Kris, stoke the romantic fire for their favorite choice.

Despite the oft-repeated vulgarism that familiarity breeds contempt, TV and press exposures appear to feed the rumor mill on the President’s romantic flings, although no further turns of seriousness. Nonetheless, the prevalent contempt or vulgarity, that is, the object or subject of the grapevine familiarity, is on no less than the head of State himself.

Aside from that cold-shoulders meeting with Shalani, obviously their parting of ways, lately President Noynoy and his alleged “inamorata” favored by Kris and Ballsy were caught not exactly loving, but the girl behaved with uninhibited familiarity. She stretched P.Noy’s long yellow T-shirt, brushed off apparently inexistent dust, and such familiar gestures, and nothing more intimate; as if a pampering mother innocently “pawing” a teenager son and, the latter seemingly disinterested over the “ministrations” of his mother.

Unfortunately – or more of fortunately as many now claim – for Councilor Shalani Soledad, her crossed love interlude has become passé, pfft, a bad dream. Her unexpected sally into showbiz may not juxtapose her into persona transformation that may spell showbiz success with “Winning Willie”. Or, the split with the much older beau could land her at the heart of a much younger, handsome, and more love-committed lifetime-partner.

What’s quite eyebrow-raising is why the Palace, especially President Noynoy’s two aforesaid sisters, continue to put him on the romantic limelight as to mention unfairly, previous sweethearts, like Korina S. herself, or the lesser TV reporter Bernadette S, both now married to their husbands. Is it to underscore that their brother now 50 years old, has always been a rampaging he-man, or at least, a ladies’ man, or a typical Casanova who changes or dumps his sweethearts like he changes “briefs”?

  If so, has such pretended predilection for flitting from flower bud to many others, and staying single until 50, and perhaps more, convinced a lot of believers? Or, isn’t it possible that there might be other serious grounds, say, psychological, physical, or attitudinal, or whatever, why he hasn’t crossed the bar of marriage? Besides, Ballsy’s candid statement that her younger brother is on “non-exclusive” relationship with the young pretty Liz Uy, such as, free to date other girls, dinner dates, and the like, proves no further commitment for the eventual altar date.

  What’s quite, again, surprising is the Palace ploy of casting the president as a normal bachelor, with lovelife cluttered by a number of sweethearts and, despite mid-century of living – much beyond the marital average – still with no plans to get married and have children. And yet, he is put up as just any other normal bachelor, with no incapacities, no hitches, no inhibitions; and, definitely, not a woman hater.

  And so, it seems that the prognostication of one sister – was it Kris? – at the start of P.Noy’s 6-year term that he wouldn’t get hitched during his reign, would turn out true. It’s quite inauspicious that the bachelor head of State, the first of its genre in Philippine history, would stay married to the presidency.

Whether it is so fated, or by choice, if only to respect the dignity and integrity of his position, let it be for now. Further grinding grits just to create the rumor maelstrom is not fair and proper. To subject the highest personage of the land to ordinary brickbats and nasty insinuations, especially on matters of the heart, ought to be left alone.

But then, no less than P.Noy himself had been already rebuffed when he wished for “privacy” as regards purely personal affairs. He who occupies a public trust position doesn’t have the privilege of privacy. In fact, there’s no end to grapevine talks on the romantic interludes or vignettes of the Palace occupant. Lately there’s the hot item that the alleged Noynoy-Liz Uy affair has just also gone pfft and awry.
