EDITORIAL - Cebu must return to the top
Camarines Sur has reportedly taken the top spot of the list of the country's tourist destinations. From an unknown province in Bicol Region, it now attracts thousands from around the world through its famous watersports complex.
Its rise to the top can largely be attributed to its enterprising officials. The province has become a testament of what a sound management can do to achieve unprecedented tourism growth.
Aside from its old churches and beaches, which surely pale in comparison to those in Cebu or in Boracay, Camarines Sur was not really known as a force in the country's tourism industry.
But an ambitious watersports park designed for wakeboarding, waterskiing and other sports activities has propelled the province to the top of the list, giving Cebu, Palawan, Bohol and Boracay a run for their money.
Now that Camarines Sur has surged to the top, Cebu officials should learn a lesson or two from its success. That the Bicol province's innovative tourist management has paid off is only a manifestation that a drive to entice visitors should not only anchored on powdery white beaches, scenic mountains and old churches.
Cebu has a lot to offer - from centuries-old churches and parks to festivals to fine beaches - to be a major magnet for local and foreign tourists. Yes it has been a major tourist destination.
But Cebu no longer holds the biggest share of the pie. It no longer has the monopoly of tourists going into the provinces. Bohol, Palawan , Boracay and Camarines Sur have become the top choices of tourists, thanks to their aggressive approaches to lure visitors.
Yes Cebu has several campaigns to spur tourism growth. In fact, many resorts here are offering huge discounts for tourists. But those are not enough to help sustain growth in the long run.
Our local tourism officials should be aware about this recent development. Tourism has been a major lifeline for Cebu 's economy.
Cebu should need a long-term rally in order for it to return to the top in the country's tourism industry.
