Statement: Sad, sad story of Marylyn and Geraldine

The story of Marylyn Zacal and Geraldine Gella who were evidently competing for the attention of the 48-year-old American and resulted to Marylyn's violent death on April 14 not only saddened but angered us. This is because so many of our young women now see only partnerships/relationships with foreigners, mostly older than them, as the only way to make their lives better.

Is there anything more unfortunate than this? When our women have to pin their hopes, dreams and future to foreigners they hardly even know or are obviously cheating on them by engaging in relationships with other young Filipino women resulting to competition, conflict, even death?

How different it could have been if our government spends tax money into basic services and not into their pockets, when government officials, do not engage in questionable deals such as purchase of lampposts, Cebu International Convention Center and submerged lands such as the one in Balili, when education and other basic services are well-funded and opportunities for development, livelihood and employment are readily available for our women?

It would have made a whole lot of difference.
