Megalomaniac

PERSPECTIVE - Cherry Piquero Ballescas -

This term refers to one who is possessed, obsessed with an excessive enjoyment in having power over other people and a craving for more of it. The term also refers to one with a psychiatric disorder in which the patient experiences delusions of great power and importance.

The term used to be reserved for a few of those who stood out in history for their obsessive love for power. In our country, the term was conferred on the Conjugal Dictators during the martial law era of Philippine history. People Power toppled the megalomaniacs from their undeserved thrones of power. People power ended their long reign of enforced rule.

That was the past. Fast forward to today. Our people are once again witnessing so many who fit the term megalomaniac.

There are those who wish to do a comeback and return to their previous positions of power. Never mind the lower, more inferior positions that they are aspiring for in May.

Malacañang occupants, past and present, are not bothered if they return as members of Congress, as members of another branch of government other than the Executive.

What they are obviously telling our people is that they can be powerful wherever, whenever they wish to be. What they are telling everyone is they want to stay in power for as long as possible. If forever is possible, they will want to hold on to power for themselves and their families. Being possessed and obsessed with power, they will do whatever is possible to stay in power.

They will claim that their means to stay in power is legal and legitimate. Sure, have not the Filipinos witnessed enough of their so-called legal maneuvers to stay in power through the long years of their rule? Have not our people learned what these power obsessed and overstayers mean by legal?

What is legal may not necessarily be moral, a term that the power-obsessed scoff at because morality is never compatible with megalomania. Morality will always block any obsession with power. Decency is also not compatible with megalomania. So is delicadeza, truthfulness, and, honesty.

Of course, the megalomaniacs will always claim they are decent, they are truthful and honest. Their acts, however, betray and contradict their pronouncements. For megalomaniacs, lies become truth and truth becomes lies.

The megalomaniacs will also say they are running for new positions because of the clamor of their constituents for them to continue their public service. People, however, are not fooled by their relentless greed for private gains, for their own sake and those of their families, never for the sake and for the love of the Filipino people.

There used to be a number of megalomaniacs in this country. However, with the recent brazen practice of power and corruption, megalomaniacs now abound throughout this country, and at all levels and branches of government.

Some obsessed and possessed by power think they are gods who can confer judgment and even the death sentence on anyone they deem to be obstacles for their megalomania.

Recent events showed the Filipino people and the world what those obsessed with power can and will do.

They will not stop short of murder to serve as warning to those who will challenge their rule, their power. They will not stop at anything and will not allow anyone or any group to stop them from having or staying in power.

For sure, these shameless, blatant acts of the megalomaniac have not gone unnoticed by our people. For sure, our people are outraged by the recent acts of all these brazen shameless megalomaniacs in our midst.

Gratefully, our history has shown us how to deal with megalomaniacs. World history also is replete with stories showing how the megalomaniacs ended up losing all in due time. Gratefully, time moves on and no one, no megalomaniac nor their family has yet stayed in power forever.

Gratefully, we know and believe, that in God’s own time and way, megalomaniacs are dealt with as they deserve.
