Manny has no political force, just the purse

Heard at the Carbon market: “Kun gusto ni Manny Pacquiao mag-kongresista puwede ... Pero naa bay kongresista nga puwedeng mag-Manny Pacquiao?”

I heard some people say Pacman doesn’t have the political force to make him a congressman. Oh, yeah? He may not have the political force but, you know, he’s got a bulging purse.

Former US President Dwight, Eisenhower once said: “What counts is not necessarily the size of the dog in the fight — it’s the size of the fight in the dog.”

Those who belittle Pacman’s political chances might want to bear in mind what Pres. Eisenhower said.

They make an issue of Manny Pacquiao’s so-called broken English. That’s no big deal. There had been — fact is, there are still — congressmen with broken English. Broken as in broken gyud.

I recall one honorable congressman from Cebu who could not tell a rooster from a hen, although the gentleman was known as a cockfight addict. One day as his fighting cock was set to fight in a cockpit he was heard yelling at his fighting cock: “Hala sige ... Fight, hen!”

Have you observed? It’s only the Filipino and Mexican boxers who make the sign of the cross atop the ring. So what, you ask? Well, nothing. Just my observation.

Nearly all angles about Manny Pacquiao have been written. His prize, his mother, his wife, his mansions, his left hook, his right straight, his love for music, etc. Nothing was written about Manny’s “great faith” in God until our entertainment editor Nathalie Tomada did an article on it in last Wednesday’s issue of this newspaper. It was what I had wanted to write, too, but I did not have the facility to do it. Thank you, Nath, for breaking the monotony in the subjects written about the Pacman.

Political observers continue to talk about the automation or computerization of the May 2010 elections. Will there be? I mean will there be automated polls in 2010? On the basis of current developments, there is reason to doubt the holding of an automated polls next year.

As of this writing (Wednesday, May 6/09) the Comelec has not yet started putting the computerized balloting in place. How could they when the bidding for the installation of the needed machines has yet to begin? What was begun long ago were the debates, disagreements, suspicions, etc.
