EDITORIAL - Chip Tsao is having his cake and eating it too

Believe it or not, but Chip Tsao put one over the Filipinos again. He put one over us by slurring us as no one had ever slurred us before. He called us as a nation of servants who have no right to lift even a dirty finger against our masters, remember?

Now Chip Tsao has put one over us again by apologizing. He went to great lengths to make a spectacle of his apology. He went before television. Then he went to the Philippine consulate in Hong Kong and even met with representatives of Filipino groups there.

Chip Tsao put one over us again because, by apologizing, he was actually reinforcing his original view that he was superior to the Filipinos. By asking for forgiveness, he was able to differentiate himself from us, who are never known to own up to mistakes.

Chip Tsao is a journalist. As such, he is expected to be knowledgeable. And he must have known, being such a close neighbor, that despite the ignominious tag of being one of the most corrupt nations in Asia, not a single Filipino has ever owned up to being corrupt.

Not even the most widespread public protest, the most virulent media criticism, or the most high profile congressional investigation can make a single Filipino accused of wrongdoing own up to anything and apologize.

This is not intended to convert Chip Tsao from heel to hero just be simply apologizing because we have never been convinced of the sincerity of his apology. We just want to point out the fact that, having once humiliated us, Chip Tsao has humiliated us once again.

And we don’t even have a defense against it. We felt offended by his derogatory remarks but there was nothing we can do except take offense. There is nothing so defeating as being confronted by truth. So, when he humiliated us again, we still did not have any defense.

This is probably the reason why Chip Tsao pressed on with his offensive by proposing the obnoxious idea of being actually an admirer of the Philippines who would have wanted one day to visit the country. The guy is having his cake and eating it too.
