The Supreme Court has ordered the BIR to pay business tycoon Lucio Tan P1 billion for collecting from Tan’s tobacco firm more than what was supposed to be correctly collected. Now it’s the BIR that has to pay a taxpayer, or else.

Another business tycoon, Henry Sy, is now the richest Filipino, according to Fortune magazine. He has replaced Lucio Tan. Sir Henry’s wealth can be seen through the many SM malls he has built nationwide. To Sy is to believe.

The price of oil in the world market has been going down. The pump price of gasoline has been going down too. The oil firms have been rolling back their prices. But people in the transport business are not rolling back their fares. They’re just rolling with the punches from the angry commuters.

The driver of the taxi I rode in recently said to me: “Di ko mo-rollback sa akong plitehan kay wa man ko mopaumento sukad ma sukad.” He said he never added the P10 add-on to the metered fare. And he said he had always been giving senior citizens the 20 percent discount they are entitled to under the law.

I told this taxi driver he was an exemplary cabbie deserving of an award from the government or any other award-giving body in our community. “Thank you, Sir,” he said. “Pero di lang ko anang award-award. Makapamenos na sa indulhensya gikan sa Ginoo.”
He was not able to elaborate because I had already reached my destination.
