Can't they see the hungry?

PERSPECTIVE - Cherry Piquero Ballescas -

The world price for oil showed some decrease yesterday, according to the news. Will the oil companies reduce their prices? Will they act as quickly to roll back prices just as they quickly raise these?

Given their track record, however, it is hard for the public to believe that the oil companies will reduce the price of oil immediately. What oil companies have been wont to do was explain how the price hikes did not match the expected increase they wanted. How often have we heard the oil companies say they are losing just as well?

Are they really losing? With almost weekly hikes, if the oil companies are still losing, then how come they are still in business until now? It is about time that their books are publicly scrutinized as well so that the Filipino people will clearly understand for themselves whether in fact, the oil companies are losing or not.

Government should take a more aggressive lead in determining why the oil companies are so quick to raise their oil prices but so slow and so stingy in their rollback amount!

The Filipino people have also started to realize how little government has been doing to avoid frequent and unexplained oil price hikes.

There is a need to rush to open the accounts of these companies. So many of our people are unable to cope with so much price hikes and VAT!

The recent Social Weather Station showed that about 2.9 million households experienced hunger at least once in the past 3 months. Given an average of about 6 persons per household, that will be close to 16 million Filipinos, children included, who have gone hungry at least once in the past 3 months!

When pressed to remove the VAT, even just for oil, this government refused saying doing so will be unfair to the poor who are the real recipients of the collected taxes. Removing the VAT, they claim, will prevent the government from pursuing their pro-poor programs!

When GMA's acceptability ratings hit the lowest recently, again her government officials were quick defend her saying that she was ready to be criticized for implementing what she thought was best for the people. Who are these people she and her propagandists say they are serving?

Can't they see the millions of poor all around them?

How many more millions will convince GMA and this government to see widespread hunger, massive unemployment, homelessness, even hopelessness among our people? Are these realities their gauge for their effective pro-poor program implementation?

GMA will once again spend time to outline in her forthcoming SONA about how this country under her leadership is on its way to joining the First World league. Her supporters will predictably applaud her, for while the millions of hungry and poor Filipinos remain as Third, even Fourth World dissidents, her supporters in Congress and local governments and in business have definitely reaped and are continuing to reap the profits of patronage!

What will convince those in power that the hungry, the jobless, the homeless are accelerating and unabating under their so-called very successful pro-poor programs? Can those who withhold the truth be able to speak and recognize the truth?
