Reader wants mass transport pushed

Noli Eala is optimistic that the Liga Pilipinas will be a big success. How can it fail? It has many legs to stand on. Have you noticed?

* * *

The Liga Pilipinas is the only cage league with a Pagadian leg, Taguig leg, Ilocos Sur leg, Misamis Oriental leg, etc. So much so that some punsters are suggesting that the Liga be called instead Lega.

A government retiree said to me: "If I only have the money for capitalization I would go into the hospital business." I asked him why and he said" "There's money in this business."

He said when his wife was hospitalized, he had to pay even for the surgical gloves used by a nurse who pulled out the cateter.He also had to pay for the use of a tv remote which was necessary for him to change channels as the tv set was installed near the ceiling. He was also billed for the cracked ice his wife needed as well as the plastic bag used to contain the ice.He also paid for the pillow used by his wife. And also the bedpan. Etc., etc.

Last Tuesday's TF editorial said: "Stories (news) are products, and like all products, stories also have shelf lives." Which reminds me of what my UST journalism professor (Jose "Joe" Bautista, the venerable editor of the old Manila Times) always pounded in his student's heads, that "news is a perishable commodity."

Everytime Joe ("Just call me Joe," he would tell his students) entered the classroom, he would pick one of us and ask: "What is news?" He wouldn't accept any definition other than: "News is a perishable commodity."

Stories have shelf lives, said our editorial. News is a perishable commodity, said my professor. That  is why workers in the newsroom are given deadlines to meet. Beyond the deadlines, the stories or news become stale and no longer fit for consumption. And that is why, too, I'm very particular about deadlines.

  Email from Honesto (my suki): "Yes, the city government should push and push for the realization of its plan to introduce the mass transport system. The poor commuters are tired, very tired, trying to cope with jeepney drivers who strike and make the riding public suffer every time they (drivers) ask for something and are not given."

Sen. Mar Roxas and Sen. Ping Lacson, two of my favorite senators, filed fewer bills than Sen. Bong Revilla and Sen. Lito Lapid, according to a news report. So what? It's the quality not the quantity of bills filed that's important.

BOBIT SAYS: "I woke up today with a happy heart, thankful for a night of rest and comfort. Grateful for opening my eyes to yet another day of God's love and provision. And so with a prayer in my lips and heart, I think of you, hoping this day finds you happy and well."
