Security guards provide no security

AS IT APPEARS - Lorenzo Paradiang Jr. -

First off, somebody needs a "belt" for changing Tuesday's title word "rapacity" (as in "rape" as root) to "capacity", thus with no sense.

This may be quite a harsh critique on the almost inutile role of security guards (SG) who are supposed to provide the safety and security of client homes and business entities.

Oftentimes the sad truth is hard to swallow. But in actuality, say, in Metro Cebu and elsewhere that's reeling from a spate of robberies and other crimes of violence, a common denominator is the presence of the nothing doing SGs.

Frequent targets are banks and their cash armored vans, jewelry/pawnshops/money changers, ATM outlets, and shopping centers where the money is.

And most victimized targets have armed SGs for security, nothing else. And yet, it has become the rule that when robbers hit them, the SGs are almost always taken unawares, and so, disarmed. They are the first to kiss the floor in helpless prone position.

Just few samplings… The heist of RCBC Cabuyao in Laguna had 10 massacred by close range head shots, and 2 of them were the disarmed SGs. In the recent public view robbery of two pawnshops along Magallanes, Cebu City, the two SGs were allegedly taken by surprise, and disarmed. Other similar hits elsewhere had alike pattern of SGs neutralized.

Very seldom, if ever in a rare blue moon, that close-in bodyguards, or SGs of establishments, have prevented, repulsed, and timely detected or preempted the approaching criminals. Also very seldom have the SGs engaged these criminals in a shootout. Almost always, robbers gain unimpeded entry and, rendering SGs ineffective and inutile.

It's no wonder that Sr. Supt. Patrocinio Comendador of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) has been obviously riled and in pique as he "wants the SGs to respond to crimes". It appears that in that twin pawnshops robbery along Magallanes, there were other SGs at nearby stores who could have helped the lone policeman in a shootout with the escaping robbers, but must have just fainted while cowering in fear.

Reasonably dismayed, Col. Comendador wished that we should have well-motivated security guards: "Kana bang dedicated gyud siyang moresponde bisan sa dili niya gibantayan in the pursuit of justice". "Asa ka dedicated", say the kibitzers.

On the SG role, the good Colonel has to confer and forge close liaison with the SG agency management/owner, as regards proper training, discipline, shooting skills, EQ, psycho testing, aptitude and other recruitment basics.

The law on security agencies has to be revisited, in fairness and justice to the SGs. Unless there be amendments to ameliorate their lot, the SGs would still be receiving a net pittance in compensation and, perhaps, not enjoying the lawful benefits due them. SGs also cry for adequate insurance and such actuarial security commensurate to the risks of their calling.

If they and their families are assured of reciprocal returns for their service, the SGs would in all likelihood render inspired and dedicated service that the public expects.

A certain robbery victim couldn't be faulted as he groused: "Naglaum ko nga dunay SecU, pero way kapuslanan kay gitiunan ang kilid sa kutsilyo, gitunol ang iyang pistola nga maoy gigamit sa tulisan pagtion nganha niya ug sa mga empleyado".

Apropos, where the hiring system is lax and, the field of choice is limited because few would apply due to very low pay and no perks, the hired SG could be wanting in EQ, guts, heft and height, proper training, dedication, and gun handling skills.
