When money speaks, truth is silent

More witty puns I saw in the captions of some photos in the Philippine Star ...

* “Mug shot” – Referring to a beer mug not the face of a crime suspect.

* “Printed matter” – Not a reading matter but a shirt with colorful prints.

* “The vest in the West” – Slugline of a caption of some men’s vests in a fashion show.

* “Get stoned” – About a ladies bag with stone accents.

* “Vested interest” – About a man’s collection of fashionable vests.

I read this in a construction industry magazine: “The drought has helped hasten the completion of the construction of some buildings.” Call that benefit of the drought.

They’re still talking about the so-called P500,000 “bribery” in the Palace. There is a Russian saying related to bribery. It says: “When money speaks the truth is silenced.”

I feel sad about what happened to former Sen. Rene Saguisag. I was one of those who supported him when he ran for senator. There was sincerity in his voice when he said he was a poor man. That put him on the same boat with me. Rene was my idol even until the day he became Erap’s lawyer and told the world, “Erap is not corrupt.”

Rene is known to his close friends as a very frank person. He was so frank that when he started to court his wife Dulce he told her in all frankness: “I am a poor man. I come from a very poor family. I have no money and I have no belongings so I don’t want to marry a rich girl. So tell me now, are you rich? Dulce reportedly replied: “No, I am not rich.” And so he married her.

The above story about Rene Saguisag’s frankness when he courted his wife I got from an article written by Joanne Rae Ramirez of the Philippine Star. Joanne also said in her article that Rene reportedly told his mother-in-law: “I cannot offer much to your daughter but I will take good care of her and I will love her for the rest of my life.”

As I write this the Philippine peso is now P42-plus against the US dollar. That means the peso has gained tremendous strength. But my friends like Tolin de la Serna, Loy Jurado and Carmelo Lariosa have expressed surprise why pandesal now costs P2 apiece when it used to sell for only Pl when the peso was still weak

I join the entire TF working force in condoling with the family of Aldrin Cabua who passed away a few days ago after an illness that had him in pain for a few weeks. Aldrin belonged to the paper’s support staff and was well-liked by everyone. He did not hold a high post in the working force but he was given the attention that he needed while still in bed and after he has breathed his last by the management led by GM Bhoy Mendoza.

Last Monday, The Freeman GM Bhoy Mendoza led a group TF personnel in paying their last respects to Aldrin in his house where his remains lie in state. That’s the least the management can do for an employee who had served it well.
