Sen. Angara's ‘aging center’
April 9, 2007 | 12:00am
"Let There Be Light" was the title of the book, lent to me by a friend for my Holy Week meditation. I was reading the book when a five-hour brown out hit my place.
Speaking of that brown out from 12:01 a.m. to 8 a.m. my friend and media colleague Loy Jurado who lives in an area also hit by the same power outage, said to me in a text message:
"Ok lang this brownout. Huwebes Santo man ron. Ting-sakripisyo."
I got the following e-mail message from M.M. Leocadio of Mandaue City:
"Bilib ko sa P300,000 deco lamppost if they could give us light even during a brownout."
During a brownout, these very expensive controversial lamppost are as useless as the incandescent bulb in my toilet.
Elgin Cruz also of Mandaue e-mailed: "The priests who spoke during the Siete Palabras at the (Cebu Metropolitan) cathedral were more hard-hitting than the laymen in the other Siete Palabras rites last Good Friday. They minced no words in delivering the potshots against those who betrayed the trust of our people whose lives got into a mess because of the betrayal."
I watched on tv the Siete Palabras at the cathedral and I say amen to what the speakers said. I also agree with reader Elgin. Yes, Sir, the betrayal of out trust in and by our government officials got us into the messy situation that we're now in. The coming May 14 elections should be an opportune time for us to reflect on what the priests said during the Siete Palabras at the cathedral.
By the way, the priests also took potshots at the notorious fraternities and sororities, drug pushers and users, and other dregs of society.
Reelectionist Sen. Edgardo Angara has proposed the establishment of an "aging center" to promote the wellness of some six million senior citizens in this country. This "aging center" would help our senior citizens who are suffering from diseases associated with aging.
This proposal of Senator Angara should have been thought of long ago but as the trite saying goes, better late than never. And late though it may be, Senator Angara should be patted on the back for coming up with the proposal. Our aging population deserves a better deal. After all, many of them, in their younger years, could've done something for the wellbeing of the present generation.
