Letter to the Editor - Silliman University celebrates Founder's Day

-
In 1898, Dr. Horace Brinsmade Silliman, a Doctor of Laws, retired businessman and philanthropist of Cohoes, New York, USA walked into the Manhattan office of the Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church and offered $10,000 to start an industrial school for Filipino boys.

Three years later and through the efforts and dedication of the missionary Dr. David Sutherland Hibbard and his wife Laura, the promise of a faraway land is fulfilled. On that bright morning of August 28, 1901, Silliman Institute in Dumaguete City began with 15 local young boys.

Now, Silliman University, "the campus by the sea" celebrates her 105th founding day anniversary.

From all peoples and creed her hallowed walls now yield countless graduates from different disciplines.

Through 105 years, Silliman University continues to blaze her lamp, and the Book of Knowledge becomes a source of inspiration. Her gates of opportunity is an affirmation made available to each Sillimanian who passes through inspired by her motto in the words of our Lord Jesus Christ: "Via, Veritas, Vita" or the Way, the Truth and the Life.

Happy Founder's Day Silliman University!
