Letter to the Editor Should we oust GMA from power?
July 8, 2006 | 12:00am
There is now a series of impeachment complaints filed by the opposition whose main obsession is to topple down President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo from power.
She has not also brought our Ship of State to a sound and prosperous destination heretofore.
Now, we must pose this question: Should we oust GMA from power and install a new one from the opposition?
Must we not allow her to finish her mandated term until 2010? The reply to this query is an emphatic "No" in the sense that her term as mandated by our constitution will expire on June 30, 2010.
Second, President John F. Kennedy once said, "The arduous tasks of nation building will not be finished in one thousand days nor in the life of this administration nor even perhaps in our lifetime on this planet. But let us begin."
Kennedy added, "Do not ask what your country can do for you but rather ask what you can do for your country.
Third, no President can ever build the whole edifice of a nation overnight. All that he is called upon to do is to add a fine stone to that edifice so that those who shall come after him may add another fine stone that will result in a strong and enduring structure.
Fourth, our President from Manuel Quezon to Gloria Macapagal Arroyo never escaped the tirades and the philippics of critics in the halls of Congress, in the plazas and over the radio.
There is no perfect President. Even Ramon Magsaysay had enemies and bitter critics. Like Jesus Christ after Palm Sunday, we hurled stones and spit at the man whom we cheered during his inauguration rites at the Luneta, at the Barasoain church or at the EDSA shrine.
It's really a martyrdom to become President of the Republic of the Philippines. In this context, let's give GMA the chance to finish her term and prove her worth in leading our country to the glorious path of abundance, progress and prosperity in the future.
