"Let's have more millionaires in this country," a congressman from the North was quoted as saying. We can achieve this by letting more people work in some government bureaus.
Mark Twain once said: "I'm opposed to millionaires, but it would be dangerous to offer me the position."
A text message I got last Saturday said: "Rise and shine! Let the rays of the sun today be your rays of hope. Gud am." There were no rays of the sun that day. It rained.
Two parents -- both mothers -- dropped by the Banat News editor's office to express their opinion (and have this opinion published) on the controversial teaching of Sex Education in the public schools. Both of them gave the DepEd decision the thumbs down.
"Instead of teaching Sex Education," said one of the mothers, "why not revive the Character and Conduct subject in the elementary grades and be serious about it?" She said many of our youngsters today need some "character buildup" and "conduct enhancement" (her words).
The other mother said she would even go farther than the reintroduction of the Character and Conduct subject. "Teach religion, too," she said. "Never mind the so-called "separation of Church and State." She stressed: "Kung makaayo sa atong kabataan ug sa katilingban, bahala na nang separation-separation sa Church ug State."
This mother said Religion can make our youngsters morally upright and "kung morally upright sila dili na kinahanglan ang Sex Education."
Oh, well, if you believe in the saying that "Mother knows best," try pondering on their views.
Speaking of mothers, here's another mother who feels bad about the abolition of the death penalty. She cursed upon reading in the papers that the death penalty law has been scrapped.
This mother, whose husband has been convicted of rape on two counts and sentenced to death, said she could never forgive her husband for raping their four-year-old daughter and a mentally sick neighbor. "Gusto ko siyang mabitay," she said. "Kung ila man gyung papason ang death penalty unya na unta human bitaya ang animal kong bana."
The aggrieved mother said her four-year-old girl continues to experience traumatic fits. She would panic and cry aloud each time she hears her father's name. "Grabe ang kadaut nga nahimo sa hayop kong bana sa among anak," she said in a voice seething with hate.
