TODAY IN THE PAST
September 29, 2005 | 12:00am
Today, September 29, 1762, Governor Rojo personally commands a surprise attack by 500 Filipinos and a number of Spanish residents on the British.
The Archbishop-Governor made this surprise initial attack with the thought that he would soon have reinforcement. It was in the previous day (September 28) that he chose Father Miguel Branas, USA, to lead the Filipino troops from San Fernando through Bangcusay on the way to Manila.
It should be noted that on September 24, the invaders started the siege of Manila. The British batteries shelled the city. The Spanish guns were fired in retaliation, but their discharges proved ineffective against the strong walls of the churches, which had fallen to the enemy.
On September 25, General Draper repeated his demand for surrender, and again Archbishop Rojo turned it down.
Meanwhile, with the new reinforcements composed of 3,000 Tagalogs and 4,000 Pampangos brought by Father Branas, the Filipinos and Spaniards rushed the construction of defense works within the city walls.
Notwithstanding their inadequate arms, they were determined to resist the invaders.
