In Mr. Max V. Soliven's By The Way column yesterday, its third paragraph on page 9 should correctly read as follows, since a typographical error had made it appear that only 1,000 Americans had fought in Bataan:

"Of the 78,000 Fil-American troops who retreated to the Bataan peninsula to make their last stand there, no more than 4,000 had been Americans – which included the officers of the Scouts, and the only all-American unit, the 31st US Infantry, plus a detachment of horse cavalry from old Fort Stotsenberg."
