MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Risa Hontiveros called for stronger accountability measures after lawmakers in the House of Representatives voted to unseat then-House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez and install former president and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as the leader of the lower chamber.
Hontiveros said a lot of issues during Arroyo's term remain unsolved today which adds to the "baggage" that Filipinos would have to carry and not forget so as to prevent repeating the mistakes of the past.
"There are a lot of people who have remained in politics and until the people are not served the accountability which they have been seeking from public officials for the cases of human rights violations, and perhaps we will keep repeating the sorry spectacles like what we've witnessed earlier," the senator told reporters after the third State of the Nation Address of President Rodrigo Duterte.
