MANILA, Philippines – The hashtag #RP612fic on Sunday trends anew on Twitter as the country celebrates the 118th Philippine Independence Day. “RP612fic” which means Republic of the Philippines June 12 fiction is currently the top trending topic on Twitter Philippines with over 163,000 tweets as of posting. It trended as Filipino netizens combined Philippine history and pop culture in their humorous tweets.

Netizens modernized Philippine history and national heroes by incorporating the current trends in the pop culture and creating their Twitter-length versions of history.

The hashtag #RP612fic started in 2009 when Filipino writer Paolo Chikiamco of RocketKapre.com started this #RP612fic Twitter event. It also trended last year. 

For this year’s Independence Day, the creative tweets shared by netizens were photos or memes of national heroes doing the running man challenge, using social media app Snapchat and Facebook and using transportation apps like GrabCar and Uber. There were also tweets where the term “squad goals” was used, as well as lyrics from songs by Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Nicki Minaj and Rihanna’s.
