Cory painting to be auctioned
MANILA, Philippines - The late former President Corazon Aquino will go down in history as an icon of democracy and probably as a celebrated artist.
For the first time ever, one of her paintings, an untitled oil on wood, will be sold in an auction, under the auspices of Leon Gallery in Makati, on Sept. 12.
The seller’s identity has not been divulged and starting bid is P120,000.
When told of the impending sale, one of Mrs. Aquino’s children said her mother’s paintings are priceless. “I would not be able to put a price on them.”
The painting was previewed yesterday, along with the biggest Bencab in history.
None of the Aquino children were present during the preview and seemed unaware that one of their mother’s paintings would be sold.
Leon Gallery owner Jaime Ponce de Leon said the painting was a gift from Mrs. Aquino to the seller.
According to one art connoisseur at the preview, because the painting is a Cory Aquino, it is likely to fetch an amount at least five times the starting bid.
