Sky lanterns, candles lit as Tacloban remembers 'Yolanda' victims

MANILA, Philippines - Survivors of super typhoon Yolanda, joined by various groups involved in efforts to help Tacloban City recover on Saturday night released dozens of sky lanterns for those who died and who went missing during the monster cyclone's onslaught in Nov. 8, 2013.

The simple ceremony was part of Tacloban City's first year of commemoration of the tragedy caused by the super typhoon.

Before the releasing of the sky lanterns, residents lighted thousands of candles on the streets of the city.

Residents of Paraiso Street in Barangay San Jose, where 23 residents were killed by Yolanda, also went out to commemorate their departed neighbors.


More than 2,000 city residents were killed during the the super typhoon's onslaught in the city, and 600 more remained missing.
