Who's who: The Ninoy Aquino assassination

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Former senator Benigno 'Ninoy' Aquino Jr., was assassinated in the afternoon of August 21, 1983, at the tarmac of the Manila International Airport.

His death was a pivotal moment in Philippine history, inspiring millions to take to the streets and protest the government of President Ferdinand Marcos, who would later call for a controversial snap election before fleeing the country and conceding the presidency to Aquino's wife. The successful ouster of the dictator would later be known all over the world as the People Power Revolution.

The Marcos government launched two investigations on Aquino's murder, while the new government of Corazon Aquino opened another investigation that led to the conviction of 16 suspects. Even then, speculations still remained on who really killed the staunch opposition leader, and who ordered his murder.

As the country commemorates the 31st death anniversary of Ninoy, we take a look at the people involved in the series of events surrounding his death.
