Eid al-Fitr must-know terminologies

MANILA, Philippines –  Although the word Eid al-Fitr may sound quite familiar to the ears, not all terminologies associated with the celebration is very well-known. 

In celebration of the feast of the breaking of the fast, these are some of the terms that would beef up our knowledge about this sacred and prominent feast.

Ramadan – It is an Arabic term, which means scorching heat or dryness. For Muslims, this is the month of fasting; regarded as one of the five pillars of Islam. It is fardth or obligatory for adult Muslims, except when they have illness, they are traveling, or they are having their menstrual bleeding. Muslims avoid consumption of food and beverages, and refrain from having sexual relations.

Sunnahs – These are the teachings and practices of prophet Muhammad. During Eid al-Fitr, the Muslims abide by thee by bathing, putting on their finest clothes, and eating sweets before going to their mosques to offer prayers.

Salat – It is the practice of ritualistic prayer in Islam. It is one of the five pillars of Islam. In Eid al-Fitr, the salat is composed on two rakats, these are the words and actions followed by the Muslims when praying to Allah. Salat is often performed in large halls.

Takbir – It is the act of raising of the hands to the ears while verbalizing Allahu Akbar or “God is the greatest.” This is often said during formal prayers. When performing salat in Eid al-Fitr, there are extra six takbirs.

Zakat – It is an act done before offering Eid prayers. Zakat means “that which purifies.” It is an act of alms-giving by Muslim based on accumulated wealth. They usually give the 2.5 percent of their total savings to the poor and needy.

Eid Mub?rak  - This means “Blessed Eid.” It is a common greeting during Eid al-Fitr.

Eidi – These are gifts given to people, especially to children during the celebration. It is comparable to Christmas presents.

Hijri Qamari calendar – It is also known as the Muslim calendar. It is used to date Muslim events. It bases its months on lunar cycles rather than solar cycles.
