Davao mayor takes 2nd job, says pay 'not enough'
MANILA, Philippines - A photo of Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has been circulating online since last week showing him driving a taxicab purportedly to earn extra money.
"Ang sweldo ng mayor ay hindi sapat! Kaya nag-drive ako ng taxi sa gabi. Para naman madagdagan ang kita ko," Duterte reportedly said in Cebuano, as noted in Facebook page Davao's Pride Official.
"Totoo 'yan: Hanapbuhay. Buti sana kung congressman ako," he added.
Philippine mayors earn around P60,000 a month.
Duterte also said, however, that his cab-driving stint helps him see how ordinary citizens in his city live and to teach potential criminals a lesson.
"Ang totoo, gusto ko makita ang (totoong) mukha ng Davao City. Nagmamaneho ako ng taxi tapos hihinto ako sa mga kanto, pero kung mang-holdap ka, malas mo lang," he said.
The photo posted on the Facebook account earned 2,300 likes as of Wednesday morning and flooded with mostly positive comments from fellow Davao residents who alluded to Duterte's fearsome reputation.
"Patama pa si Mayor sa mga congressmen na malaki na ang suweldo, kurakot pa. Thumbs up to you, mayor!" Facebook user Kram Rax Medina said in Cebuano.
"Dapat sa Davao tinatapon mga basurang politiko, para matutuo sila ng tamang asal," Edda Clarette commented.
Even those who do not hail from Davao lauded Duterte for a show of political will.
"The only one in the Philippines. I'm not from Davao but I'm proud of Mayor Duterte," Jesusito Montenegro said..
