Girl, 11, honored for heroism in fire
MANILA, Philippines - The Parañaque City Council recognized yesterday the heroic act of an 11-year-old girl who almost had her leg amputated for trying to save a three-year-old boy from a fire caused by a plane crash last year.
“The heroic and unselfish act of Rodelyn Molina in risking her life to save another, deserves commendation and recognition from the city government,” declared the resolution, which was passed by the council on Feb. 22.
Molina was recognized during yesterday’s flag-raising ceremony at city hall.
She received a plaque of appreciation and will receive a P50,000 cash reward, in accordance with the city council’s resolution.
“Rodelyn’s act is a shining example of uncommon courage and fierce determination to save others even if she comes in harm’s way,” said Mayor Florencio Bernabe Jr. in a statement.
“We commend her for this selfless act and urge our citizens to develop this quality and come to the aid of fellow citizens in times of great need as in disasters like this one,” he added.
Molina sustained third degree burns for pulling Clyde Reflorido away from the site where a light cargo plane crashed in Lower Taiwan Extension, Barangay Don Bosco last Dec. 10.
Reflorido eventually died, while Molina sustained third degree burns all over her body, including her face, said Lloyd Palconan, city public information chief.
Molina was initially treated at the Makati Medical Center before she was transferred to a public hospital, until she was discharged last month.
Her wounds have not yet completely healed. She could not hold the plaque given to her because the burns on her hands are still fresh.
